Product Description

Sodium benzoate can be used as a preservative. It is most widely used in acidic foods such as salad dressings, carbonated drinks, jams and juices, pickles, dressings, and frozen yogurt. It is also used as a preservative in medicines and cosmetics. It can be converted into benzoic acid under acidic conditions and has antibacterial effect. Benzoic acid has poor water solubility and is generally not used directly. The US FDA limits its concentration as a food preservative to 0.1% (by weight). Sodium benzoate is also permitted as an animal food additive up to 0.1 percent, according to the American Association of Feed Control Officials.
